Auckland harbour walking & cycling bridge

Micky Turner made this Official Information request to Michael Wood

The request was successful.

From: Micky Turner

Dear Michael Wood,

Can you please provide the following information:

1. Survey or any research undertaken which shows the number of people who will likely use the Auckland harbour walking & cycling bridge each day.

2. Computer modelling of how the proposed Auckland harbour walking & cycling bridge will ease traffic congestion in Auckland.

3. Why the latest plans for a Auckland harbour walking & cycling bridge will (if implemented) cost close to 1 billion dollars.

4. Alternative solutions the Labour government has considered and why they were rejected (including abandoning the project until a tunnel is finished).

5. Any discussions you have had with other ministers and the Ministry of Transport regarding the proposed Auckland harbour walking & cycling bridge via email - including but not limited to the cost blowout, plus why Starship Children's Hospital is begging for donations while the Labour government pour money into vanity projects such as this bridge and the Pike River Mine.

Yours faithfully,

Micky Turner

"Can you please provide the following information:

2. Computer modelling of how the proposed Auckland harbour walking & cycling bridge will ease traffic congestion in Auckland.

Kia ora Micky

I refer to your below request pursuant to the Official Information Act 1982 to Hon Michael Wood, Minister of Transport, on 23 June 2021.

This email is to notify you that we are extending the 20 working days available to respond to your request, pursuant to section 15A of the Official Information Act. We require up to an additional 10 working days to respond to your request. Therefore you can expect to receive a response by 4 August 2021.

The reason for the extension is that consultations necessary to make a decision on the request are such that a proper response to the request cannot reasonably be made within the original 20 working-day limit.

You have the right under section 28(3) of the Official Information Act to make a complaint about the extension to the Ombudsman.

Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

Ngâ mihi

Thanks Michael,

Your response was:

"Forecasts completed in 2019 estimated that there would be 1,700 pedestrians and 2,700 one-way cycle trips daily on the bridge component (Westhaven to Akoranga) of the Northern Pathway on an average day in 2026."

These figures seem very high and very optimistic. There is no evidence in the documentation of local polling to see who would actually use it regularly.

The other document indicates that 797 people 'might' use the cycle bridge daily. It also seems to say the traffic decongestion benefits would be a reduction of $54 million over 40 years. This would not warrant a potentially $1 billion spend on a new dedicated lane.

Maybe one day someone will come up with a better and cheaper plan. Potentially a bridge with shops, restaurants and cafes on it - which expands the usability of the waterfront.

Cheers - Micky
