From: Joanna McLeod
Dear Ministry of Health,
What size needles are being used for the COVID vaccination in fat patients?
Is New Zealand using the 38mm needles for fat people as recommended overseas ie: https://www.rivm.nl/en/covid-19-vaccinat... ?
If not, why not?
Yours faithfully,
Joanna McLeod

Good afternoon Joanna,
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) request to the
Ministry of Health (the Ministry) for:
"What size needles are being used for the COVID vaccination in fat
patients?
Is New Zealand using the 38mm needles for fat people as recommended
overseas
ie: [1]https://scanmail.trustwave.com/?c=15517&...
If not, why not?"
The Ministry is providing a response below.
The supply of needle is the LDS 25G 25mm needle. There is also an option
for a standard 21G 38mm needle for those with larger arms. We have had
feedback of some discomfort with the 21G needle so have sourced an
alternative size of LDS 23G 32mm which will arrive later in the year.
DHBs have the option to source a different needle for larger arms through
their general supplier until the COVID-19 Vaccine and Immunisation
Programme receive the supply.
I trust this information fulfils your request. Under section 28(3) of the
Act you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review any decisions made
under this request. The Ombudsman may be contacted by email at:
[2][email address] or by calling 0800 802 602.
