Proposed TVNZ + RNZ Merger Details

Dillon Pentz made this Official Information request to Ministry for Culture and Heritage

The request was partially successful.

From: Dillon Pentz

Tēnā koutou,

I am interested in finding out what details currently exist about the proposed merger of TVNZ and RNZ, as well as progress on putting that proposal to the government.

In specific, I would like the following information:

1. Any documents or cases, complete or otherwise, that outline the benefits or problems with the merger, and how the resulting merger might look. This would include, but not be limited to the business case being produced by the consultant PwC which has already been provided to Stuff.

2. (If not already included in the first request), whether there is any intent to impose or adopt a charter that would cover the resulting merger should it go ahead. If such details exist or are known to the Ministry, I would also like the details or proposed terms of that charter.

3. (If not already included in the first request), whether there is any plans or proposals for how TVNZ and RNZ may continue operating in a partially independent manner under a merger, or plans/proposals to address issues with the different cultures at each respective company. If such details exist or are known to the Ministry, I would also like those details.

4. Any current timeline for completing and submitting the proposal.

5. Any additional information that might be relevant to my inquiry.

If there is any issues with my request, or anything is unclear, please do contact me and I will aim to respond as soon as possible. Should the information be unavailable or difficult to retrieve, I am willing to discuss refining my request.

Please provide this information in an accessible, searchable format.

Ngā mihi nui,
Dillon Pentz

I write in relation to your request below.

The Official Information Act requires a decision to be made as soon as practicable. In this case the Ministry requires additional time to respond to your request. The reason for this extension is that consultations necessary to make a decision on the request are such that a proper response to the request cannot reasonably be made within the original time limit.

You will receive a decision on your request no later than 13 May 2021, earlier if possible.

You have the right, under section 28(3) of the OIA, to make a complaint to an Ombudsman about our decision to extend this request.

Kind regards,

Ministerial Services
