I write regarding your Official Information request dated 4 February 2021
requesting ‘a list of vendors that have provided data science services to
DIA in the last three years.’
There is currently no generally accepted definition of ‘Data Science’. As
such, I seek to clarify the scope of your request.
I understand that data science can be described as follows:
Data Science is a discipline that fuses mathematics, statistics and
computer science to gain insight from data. It goes beyond statistical
analysis, because it incorporates advanced techniques of data mining,
machine learning, pattern recognition, feature engineering and artificial
intelligence. The Data Science approach implements powerful tools such as
classification, clustering, prediction, and optimisation techniques to
turn both structured and unstructured data into tangible values and
insights.
If this does not align with the intended scope of your request, please
respond with clarification/amendment at your earliest convenience.

Dear Maria Morunga,
The definition I have provided to other agencies upon request is:
"vendors that are conducting data cleaning, analysing data held by DIA, building mathematical models, and/or developing algorithms for analytical or operational use, including through the use of statistical methods or machine learning. However, I would not want this to narrow the scope too much and vendors of associated services should be included." I think that aligns with the description you have provided so am happy to proceed with that.
Yours sincerely,
Andrew Chen
