Zopiclone

J Smith made this Official Information request to Pharmaceutical Management Agency

The request was successful.

From: J Smith

Dear Pharmaceutical Management Agency,

As I understand Close Control prescritions ended 1 July 2012, is this correct ?.

If it is correct I have noticed Zopiclone is NOT on the list of "safety medicines", and is not on the Pharmac schedule as a "safety medicine" ?.

If a Docotor is still endorsing there prescriptions for Zopiclone " close Control", can the patient ask the pharmacist to give the full 3 month supply in one dispensing ?, as its NOT a "safety medicine", and the "close control" program has ended 01 July 2012 ?.

Yours faithfully,

J Smith

Pharmaceutical Management Agency

Dear J Smith,

Thank you for your email about the dispensing frequency of zopiclone.

In 2012, Close Control Prescribing became known as the Dispensing Frequency Rule and some amendments were made.

While zopiclone is not a safety medicine it can only dispensed in Monthly Lots (or less) under the Dispensing Frequency Rule. Zopiclone cannot be dispensed in 90 Day Lots.
You can find the full details of the Dispensing Frequency Rule on page 18 of the following link: http://www.pharmac.govt.nz/2014/02/01/Sc...

It should be noted that zopiclone is currently being considered to be included on the list of safety medicines.

I hope this is of assistance. Please feel free to contact us again if you have any further questions.

Kind regards,
Lauren Grierson
