I refer to your request of 25 November 2020. We understand your request
for “exam grade distribution” data for a course to mean how many students
achieved a mark in the examination for that course that would correspond
to an A+ grade (i.e. a mark of 90-100%), how many students achieved a mark
in the examination for that course that would correspond to an A grade
(i.e. a mark of 85-89%), etc. You requested this information for all
courses examined in Semester One and in Semester Two for the years
2014-2020, with additional specific breakdowns requested for courses
examined in Semester Two 2020.

 

To give you some idea of the scale of your request, in Semester Two 2020
there were 700 courses with exams, 25897 students sitting exams, and
approximately 80,000 exam sittings. Taking Semesters One and Two for the
years 2014-2020 together, there have been over a million examination
sittings. Unfortunately, the requested information cannot be provided
without the University expending an excessive amount of staff time. Our
systems are not set up to provide this data output for individual
components of course grades.

 

Your request for this information is refused under section 18(f) of the
Official Information Act. Neither extending the time limit, imposing a
charge, nor consulting with you would remove the reason for this refusal.
You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with this response.

groups of those who took the exam online and those who took the exam
in-person.

 

2. Exam grade distributions for all Semester 2 2020 courses with exams
that took place on or after Saturday 14th November 2020

 

3. Exam grade distributions for all courses with exams in Semester 1 and
Semester 2 for the years 2014-2019, and for all courses with exams in
Semester 1 2020.

 

4. Any communications between the Senior Leadership team concerning
differences in exam performance for students who took exams overseas vs
exams in-person in Semester 2 2020.

 

I understand that as exams are still being marked, some of the requested
information may still be being gathered at the time of this request - as
such, please let me know if an extension beyond the typical 21 working
days would allow the request to be answered in full.
