Hi Brian

Thank you for your request.  It takes a couple of months for the data we
collect to all be reported so I’ve amended the time period in what I’m
supplying to July 2019-June 2020.   That’s a complete financial year and
ensures that any of the changes implemented on July 1 (in the hospital
data) don’t impact your data.

I’ve attached a spreadsheet which have the number of publicly funded
hospital discharges with any reported external cause code of intentional
self-harm in 2019/20 broken down by whether the patient was alive at
discharge, age and ethnicity.  I’d note that people hospitalised multiple
times (transfers, readmissions, multiple incidents) are counted each time.

I’ve also attached a spreadsheet with antidepressant and anxiolytic
scripts (a script is a first dispensing of a prescription for a given
chemical) by ethnicity and age.  There are some dispensings where the age
is recorded in the 0-4 age group.  I suspect that this is due to parents
who have their child with them when they get there prescription, and the
GP puts the wrong NHI number down.

With pharmaceutical dispensings this year, when the lockdown was announced
there is a large spike in dispensings as patients made sure they had
enough of their regular medications to last through that period.  This
causes a large increase in dispensings in March.  Then April has less as
most of the people who normally would have got a new prescription in April
(as most prescriptions last a maximum of 3 months) had already got them so
there’s less dispensings this month.

We don’t hold much information on anxiety and depression.  We do have
hospitalisation data, and we have some mental health contact data but most
mental health services don’t report diagnosis information to us.

I hope this helps.  Please contact me if you have any questions.

Cheers
