Kia ora Andrew
Thank you for your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the
Act) to the Ministry of Health (the Ministry).
There is no publicly accessible web API that lists details about the
current cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand. As such, your request for this
information is refused under 18(e) of the Act, as it does not exist.
For your reference, ESR has a publicly available COVID-19 dashboard of the
live cases in New Zealand at the following link:
[1]https://nzcoviddashboard.esr.cri.nz/
Information about the current confirmed and probable cases is updated
regularly on the Ministry website:
[2]https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/dise....
The Ministry routinely publishes the latest on the Government’s response
on the COVID-19 section of the Ministry’s website:
[3]https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/dise....
The Government also provides regular updates on the COVID-19 website:
[4]https://covid19.govt.nz/.
Under section 28 of the Act, you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to
review any decisions made under this request.
Thank you for taking the time to write to the Ministry.

Hi Andrew
I've put together a scraper for COVID-19 statistics from the MOH website, with an API here: https://github.com/simeonmiteff/nzcovid1...
Many others are also either manually or automatically maintaining machine-readable copies of the same data. To make matters worse, they tweak the format of the HTML tables and break my parser almost every day.
Meanwhile, it looks like that the case information is recorded in a database maintained by ESR (it is called EpiSurv). In addition to the dialy updates (probably based on a exported snapshot) to the MOH website, they are now also uploading copies to arcgis.com, from where you can dump some data in JSON format. More details here:
https://github.com/nzherald/nz-covid19-d...
I'd be very interested in working with ESR to expose COVID-19 stats in EpiSurv via an open API.
Good luck with the OIA request.
Regards,
Simeon.
