Information on NZ music courses

Michael Brown made this Official Information request to Victoria University of Wellington

The request was successful.

From: Michael Brown

Dear Victoria University of Wellington,

I am undertaking some research into NZ music courses offered by local universities. The Ministry of Education has provided me with some enrolment data for these courses from 2009 to 2018.

The courses include several offered by Victoria University, including during the period when the New Zealand School of Music was jointly run with Massey University. I have found some additional information on the VUW website and in the University calendars, but not all that I need to fully interpret the MoE data. Could you please clarify for me the following aspects:

1. Regarding the course MUSC 249 (Music in New Zealand Society), the MoE data shows no registered enrolments for the years 2009 to 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2018, but I want to know whether this was due to lack of demand or the course not being offered. Can you please clarify whether the course MUSC 249 was offered in these years? Note that the MoE data was rounded to the nearest 5, so "0" may have indicated 1-2 enrolments.

2. Is MUSC 249 (Music in New Zealand Society) still being offered? The VUW course finder only has details for 2016 (see: https://www.victoria.ac.nz/courses/musc/...).

3. Regarding MUSC 347 (Topic in New Zealand Music), was this offered in the year 2015? The VUW course finder information only goes back to 2016.

4. Regarding the course MUSC 151 (Maori Music Performance), was this offered in the year 2012? It appears this course was re-coded as PERF 151 in 2013.

Your help with clarifying these questions would be much appreciated. I previously emailed the University directly with this enquiry (8 October 2019), but received no information.

Yours faithfully,

Michael Brown
