Benefit Overpayments
R JUNIOR made this Official Information request to Ministry of Social Development
The request was successful.
      From: R JUNIOR

    Dear Ministry of Social Development,
Please provide information on how beneficiary over-payments are calculated
Provide figures on how many beneficiaries have been overpaid in the last 3 years
The total amount that has been overpaid to beneficiaries in the last 3 years
How much has been recovered (over-payment debts) from beneficiaries in the last 3 years
Figures/information on how many over-payment debts have been challenged through Review of Decision
Figures on how many over-payment debts were found to have been incorrect and consequently wiped
Any information regarding common reasons for incorrectly calculating over-payment debts
Please dismiss cases/figures of fraud or investigation of fraud when giving figures, as per FYI.org.nz request #8408: "The vast majority of overpayments established by the Ministry are not cases of criminal fraud. They are simply cases where a client's circumstances have changed and they have not let Work and Income know in time before a payment has been made."
Yours faithfully,
R JUNIOR
