List of NCEA Achievement and Unit Standards
N Gyles made this Official Information request to New Zealand Qualifications Authority
The request was successful.
From: N Gyles
Dear New Zealand Qualifications Authority,
I am requesting a list of NCEA Achievement and Unit Standards, in CSV, XLS or another suitable database format under the Official Information Act. I would prefer an electronic response and am a NZ Citizen & Resident for the purposes of the Act.
I would expect the following information from this request for each standard:
* Title
* Standard number
* Type (Unit/Achievement)
* Version number
* Level
* Credits
* Category
* Status (expired / expiring / current)
I understand this information is presented on the NZQA website already (https://www.nzqa.govt.nz/framework/searc...), however, it is not easily processed and there is no clear way to download this information or query against it from external systems. Additionally, this does not show expired standards.
I believe much of this information may be available to people with an educational provider login via the units.txt file.
Please note, as there have been several previous OIA requests for this information in the past (e.g. https://fyi.org.nz/request/2370-list-of-..., https://fyi.org.nz/request/5954-ncea-ach..., https://fyi.org.nz/request/5954-ncea-ach...) this dataset may also be a good candidate for publishing on data.govt.nz
Yours faithfully,
Natalie

From: N Gyles
Dear Team Mailbox NZQA Ministerials,
Thank you for your prompt response, most appreciated. However unfortunately there are a couple of amendments required to meet the original request:
* the .xlsx file attached is unable to be opened in Excel - when I try to open it I am getting the error message "Excel completed file level validation and repair. Some parts of this workbook may have been repaired or discarded. Replaced Part: /xl/worksheets/sheet2.xml part with XML error. Whitespace expected. Line 2, column 5166109." The workbook then opens with the front sheet displaying correctly but the sheet with data does not have any information. I can only guess this is because it was sent as a .xlsx format but has far too many records for that format (perhaps due to having all the expired standards and all the versions included in the one file). Can you please supply the data in a format that can be opened - perhaps by supplying it as a csv, or sending in the same way as previous OIAs on the same subject, where the expired standards were sent in a separate file?
* There is no indication of which Field a Unit Standard is in - I see the Notes page of your .xlsx states "'Category' has not been included as not found in our system", however I had used the same wording of a previous OIA (linked), where category had been correctly interpreted as needing Domain/Field etc. Would it be possible for you to please include this information in your response, so that the Unit Standards can be filtered appropriately.
I am very grateful for your assistance, thanks once again.
Nga mihi,
N Gyles

Pleasingly, NZQA have now made Standards data publicly available on data.gov:
catalogue.data.govt.nz/dataset/list-of-standards-by-category
David Hartley left an annotation ()
I have just downloaded the data from data.govt.nz, fantastic resource. The only thing missing for me is whether each standard is/was assessed externally or internally. Is there any way of appending this data?
N Gyles left an annotation ()
@David Hartley after a bit of a prod the NZQA team have now published the current version of the Unit Standards data. Peculiarly, it's now under a different URL for 2020 (rather than updating same dataset) but GREAT that it is available! The team tell me that whilst the current version doesn't have internal vs external assessment they will be able to add that field in the coming days. Hopefully they can make publishing this a regular event.

Has this request been fulfilled? Many of us would find this information useful.
Additional useful information would be the expiry date for each standard.
