Snapshot police cell occupancy

Ti Lamusse made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

The request was successful.

From: Ti Lamusse

Dear New Zealand Police,

Please provide me with the snapshot population of all NZ police cells on the final day of each quarter, as far back as records permit. In other words, please provide me with the number of people in all NZ police cells facilities on March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31 of each year, as far back as records permit.

Please break this down further by ethnicity and gender of the population.

Yours faithfully,

Ti Lamusse

Dear Ti

I refer to your request of 16 May 2019 for the following information:

“Please provide me with the snapshot population of all NZ police cells on
the final day of each quarter, as far back as records permit. In other
words, please provide me with the number of people in all NZ police cells
facilities on March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31 of each
year, as far back as records permit.”

In order to provide the information for this request, a manual search of
each day’s custody notes would need to be undertaken in each Police
District. For this reason, your request is declined under section 18(f) as
the information requested cannot be made available without substantial
collation or research.

You have the right, under section 28(3) of the Official Information Act
1982, to ask the Ombudsman to review my decision if you are not satisfied
with the way I have responded to your request.

Ngā mihi
