The Hidden Job Market
Allen Reynolds made this Official Information request to Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment
Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment did not have the information requested.
From: Allen Reynolds
Dear Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment,
hello
Careers NZ, for example, explains* – “A typical job search in New Zealand relies on internet websites such as Seek and TradeMe, recruiters and newspaper adverts to find a role. But have you heard of the hidden job market?”
The hidden job market is the body of jobs and employers not publicly known or advertised.
And many sources allude to it being many times larger than the public job market.
MBIE gathers, analyses and comments on job data and job advertising – in the Quarterly Labour Market Reports, for example.
Questions -
For the period 01 January 2000 to present -
Does MBIE gather data on the hidden job market, or hidden jobs?
Has MBIE, or it’s predecessors, gathered data on the hidden job market, or hidden jobs?
Has MBIE, or it’s predecessors, gathered data on how employers have filled present or past jobs?
Has MBIE, or it’s predecessors, gathered data on how job holders have gained present or past jobs?
Sources of such data could include, but are not limited to, employees, employers, job recruiting bodies, and organisations representing employers and employees.
If ‘yes’ to any question above, where/how can I gain access to this data?
Is this data, or has this data been, published in any form? If ‘yes’, please specify.
Is this data specific to New Zealand?
Is this data specific to any region(s) of New Zealand? If ‘yes’, name them please.
Is this data specific to particular job sectors? If ‘yes’, name them please.
On-line access to the data is preferred – please provide links, if available.

Dear CLM Ministerial Services,
many thanks for your prompt and helpful reply
even though MBIE do not collect the information I requested, that is 'a data point'
and, they helpfully indicate that it is likely no other government body collects this info either
