From: Creating Miracle Minds

Dear Ministry of Transport,

I wish to reverse the registration process, unregister my car if you like. On the mr15 form, there may be options for scrapping, selling, exporting etc. But I do not wish to do any of these things, I want the car to become one of my posessions, as opposed to a registered vehicle. I must remind you I am aware of the meaning of the word 'registration' according to Black's law dictionary.
I want to be the rightful owner, as opposed to the registered keeper. I want the car to have no connection with me on any records, I want the car to be nothing more than a belonging which I keep. How do I go about this process?

Hello Creating Miracle Minds

Thank you for your email to Ministry of Transport on 26 August 2018
regarding the deregistration of your vehicle. Your email was referred to
the NZ Transport Agency on 7 September 2018.

The Transport Agency acknowledges you originally requested this
information under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act). However, as
the information you require is publically available, your request has
instead been considered as general correspondence.

The purpose of the Motor Vehicle Register is to identify the person who is
responsible for a vehicle, including payment of licence fees and any fines
or infringements. True legal title to a vehicle can only be proven by sale
and purchase agreements or similar documentation.

If you no longer wish to use your vehicle on the road, you may cancel the
registration by completing an Application to cancel registration (MR15)
form. The MR15 shows five options for reasons the registration is to be
cancelled and the customer is to select the most appropriate. In this
instance, the most appropriate option for you to permanently remove the
vehicle form the road would be Option E.

The MR15 form is available from any of our plate agents (AA – Automobile
Association, VINZ – Vehicle Inspection New Zealand, VTNZ – Vehicle Testing
New Zealand).

If you have any further queries please feel free to reply to this email or
phone our Contact Centre on 0800 108 809. We are open Monday to Friday,
between 8am and 6pm.
