What is the comparative incidence and prevalence of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis in NZ vs elsewhere

T Monk made this Official Information request to Ministry of Health

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for T Monk to read recent responses and update the status.

From: T Monk

Dear Ministry of Health,

I personally know/knew 3 people on Waiheke Island with the diagnosis of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, diagnosed over ~ the last 5 years. Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis is a rare and usually fatal lung disease.

2 of these 3 friends are now dead. None of them were involved in high risk occupations. This has raised concerns about what is going on.

Waiheke has a population of only 7,700 vs NZ with 4,700,000

The published incidence in the world is: 0.6 per 100,000 person years to 17.4 per 100,000 person years
The published prevalence in the world is: 0.7 per 100,000 in Taiwan to 63.0 per 100,000 in the United States
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/article...

I am interested in the incidence and prevalence of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) in NZ in general, comparatively by region, and how Waiheke Island compares in these statistics.

1. What is the incidence of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) in NZ overall, versus in other coutries of the world?

2. What is the comparative incidence of IPF in NZ by region?

3. What is the incidence of IPF on Waiheke Island?

4. What is the prevalence of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) in NZ overall, versus in other coutries of the world?

5. What is the comparative prevalence of IPF in NZ by region?

6. What is the prevalence of IPF on Waiheke Island?

7. Does the NZ government do regular atmospheric testing for chemicals in the atmosphere? (If so, where is this done; and could you please provide results from the past 20 years or a link to results)?

8. Does the NZ government do regular atmospheric radiation monitoring and radiation monitoring of fish? (If so, where is this done; and could you please provide results from the past 20 years, or a link to results)?

NZ has universal heath care. New Zealand has a high prevalence of asthma, with one in seven children (15 percent) aged 2–14 years (120,000 children) and one in nine adults (11 percent, 401,000 adults) reporting taking current asthma medication.

Besides chemical spraying for various pests; Governments and corporations have been experimenting on controlling the weather for decades. Many of the weather modification patents include the injection of chemicals into the atmosphere.

It is of practical importance to us as a country to be monitoring what is happening to the environment, especially contaminants that may affect the rates of respiratory and other diseases.

Thank you for your help.

Yours faithfully,

T Monk

Dear Ministry of Health,

Thank you for your initial reply. It was helpful, (albeit it illustrates how much certain important diseases have been under-reported in NZ)

I personally know of 2 people who live on Waiheke who died of complications IPF. Another friend is living with it, but very unwell.
👉🏼It’s GPs and Specialists who would be the primary carers of patients with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Could you please answer the other questions, and give the annual data for a longer period that such data has been recorded (eg 20 years - so trends can be seen)
Also, may I add a question that might be found on death and autopsy certificates

Q. How many people have died annually in NZ over the past 30 years (or since death certificate data has been digitally recorded) where Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis has been listed as a cause or contributing factor?

Thank you again for your help.

Yours faithfully,

T Monk

PS It would be great if the Ministry of Health had a web site where stats requested in OIA requests could be found by category by other people with questions about the same thing.
