Briefing to Andrew Little

Ross Francis made this Official Information request to Ministry of Justice

The request was partially successful.

From: Ross Francis

Dear Ministry of Justice,

On 23 December 2017, the NZ Herald published an article which stated that Justice Minister Andrew Little has received a briefing from the Justice Ministry (see link below). The article stated that: “Little was told by the Ministry of Justice its staff already carried out the functions of a Criminal Cases Review Commission. The briefing told Little there had been work done - but not put in place - over the past 15 years that ‘could strengthen arrangements for reviewing miscarriages of justice.’”

Please send me all records/information that the Ministry sent the NZ Herald in regards to any briefing given to the Minister including relevant records/information imparted about a Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC). This includes records/ information about the functions of a CCRC that apparently are carried out by Ministry staff. Has the Ministry informed Andrew Little, or the current Government, of the benefits that might emanate from a CCRC? Has the Ministry identified any benefits that might emanate from introduction of a CCRC? If so, what possible benefits have been identified by officials including any information about possible benefits that is held in the minds of officals?

Ross Francis
