Contaminated sites in Opuanke
Dr Robert Shaw made this Official Information request to Taranaki Regional Council
The request was successful.
From: Dr Robert Shaw
Dear Taranaki Regional Council,
I am having problems extracting information you hold on contaminated, and thus potentially dangerous, sites in Opunake. It seems rather basic that this is information you would want to provide in the interests of public safety. You want to charge me to search your databases and report. Your online database available to the public lacks important information.
I believe there are three contaminated sites in Opunake:
1. The heavy metals site of the old railway facility. This was assessed decades ago and a high concentration of arsenic was found. You must have an update from your monitoring of this.
2. The old Court House building has asbestos and this has interfeared with its ownership status. Has this been resolved.
3. The old Post Office buidling also was found to have asbestos and has thus been closed. What is the progress on resolving this?
Please update information these three sites, particularly indicating the action you have taken. What other sites are there in Opuanke which should be of concerns to your ratepayers and citizens?
Yours faithfully,
Dr Robert Shaw
