Acknowledging your request for information under the Official Information Act 1982 regarding cost of enforcing contempt of court including imprisonment.

With regard to the first part of your request, the Ministry does not have an activity based costing system and is unable to answer the first cost breakdown question, whether it is about breaching court orders generally or contempt of court in particular. We therefore decline this part of your request under Section 18G of the OIA, as the Ministry does not hold this information.

With regard to the second part of your request relating to cost of imprisonment for contempt of court, we have transferred this to the Department of Corrections as it is believed to be more closely connected with the functions of that agency. In these circumstances, we are required by Section 14 of the OIA to transfer your request.
