Sam Bishop made this Official Information request to Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children

The request was successful.

From: Sam Bishop

Dear Ministry for Vulnerable Children, Oranga Tamariki (MVCOT),

I request the following information under the Official Information Act:

1. What is the Ministry's policy on methamphetamine (P) use by parents and/or caregivers of children who are already working with the MVCOT?

2. Does the MVCOT require parents and/or caregivers, who have been informed as being users/suppliers of P, to undergo drug tests for the use of an illegal Class A substance to ensure children are not in the presence of the illegal substance?

3. Does the use/supply of P by parents and/or caregivers warrant the immediate removal of children in their care and if not why not?

4. Does the MVCOT leave children in the care of parents and/or caregivers who are know users/suppliers of P and if so why?

Yours faithfully,

Sam

Dear Sam Bishop

On 19 April you emailed the Ministry requesting, under the Official
Information Act 1982, the following information:

·         What is the Ministry's policy on methamphetamine (P) use by
parents and/or caregivers of children who are already working with the
MVCOT?

·         Does the MVCOT require parents and/or caregivers, who have been
informed as being users/suppliers of P, to undergo drug tests for the use
of an illegal Class A substance to ensure children are not in the presence
of the illegal substance?

·         Does the use/supply of P by parents and/or caregivers warrant
the immediate removal of children in their care and if not why not?

o Does the MVCOT leave children in the care of parents and/or caregivers
who are know users/suppliers of P and if so why?

The Ministry has decided to grant your request. However, it will take some
time to prepare the information for release. The information will be sent
to you shortly.

Good Evening Sam

I refer to the Ministry’s letter of 27 June 2017 in response to your

you were dissatisfied with that response and you requested a review by the
Ombudsman.

We have been working with the Ombudsman’s office to assist with their
investigation of your complaint and agreed to provide you with a clearer
and more substantial response to the four questions you posed.

We trust that the attached letter provides the additional information you
were seeking.  If you have any further questions in respect of this
specific request or more generally on the subject, we are happy to discuss
the matter with you.  Contact details are provided in the attached letter.
