Paremoremo
Emmy Rākete made this Official Information request to Department of Corrections
The request was successful.
From: Emmy Rākete
Department of Corrections,
I am interested in the conditions of confinement in Auckland Prison (Paremoremo).
My questions are as follows:
1) How many prisoners are kept in their cells for 23-hours a day
2) On average, how many hours per day are prisoners kept in their cells
3) Can prisoners freely interact with one another?
4) Are there restrictions on the number of hours per day that prisoners can interact?
5) How many prisoners are held in protective segregation?
6) Is segregation used as a means of discipline? If so, how many prisoners are involuntarily segregated?

These two quotes seem a bit inconsistent with one another:
"The Department has interpreted 'protective segregation' to mean voluntary protective custody (voluntary segregation)."
"[Directed segregation] is utilised for prisoner who are assessed as being... at risk from others."
I feel like they should have just asked you for clarification instead of guessing at how they should convert "protective segregation" into their own jargon.
Although I see they did also provide the number of prisoners in Auckland Prison who are under directed segregation, which I'd assumed was what you wanted to know as your fifth question.
