Cost of water fluoridation.

Connie Winslow made this Official Information request to Ministry of Health

The request was partially successful.

From: Connie Winslow

Dear Ministry of Health,
Please supply the following information.

What is the per person cost of water fluoridation in NZ?

Who pays for this? Is it the local DHB or the town ratepayer?

Does cost of it alter with the size of the town?

What are the ongoing costs as to operate, test, maintain equipment, replace pipes, etc?

Will there be fluoride free sites for people to get a fluoride free supply of drinking water, not from plastic bottles sold in stores?

What will be available for people on home dialysis to filter out the fluoride?

Yours faithfully,

Connie Winslow

Thanks for making this request Connie, I was just about to do so as a follow up to my request about fluoridation chemicals used, and their suppliers (https://fyi.org.nz/request/1443-chemical...). It would be great to get specific figures for exactly how much public money has been given to Orica in exchange for the industrial wastes used in water fluoridation, as well as the figures for the total cost of the fluoridation schemes that you have asked for.

How can we get government departments to put their reply text in the body of the reply email, as well as (or instead of) attaching it as a .PDF? I had to manually type out the URL in the .PDF reply here from the Ministry of Health. Even though this reply is in the public domain, if I wanted to quote it in an article, I'd hate to manually type out the quote. This seems obstructive, and counterproductive to the purpose of OIA releases.

The Sapere report referred to in the text can be found here:
http://www.health.govt.nz/system/files/d...

Cost information is on pages 24-26. Note that it avoids ever giving a simple figure (even an estimate) of the total cost to the public of fluoridation per year. With sufficient analysis of the information presented, it may be possible to come up with a figure, but it couldn't easily be referenced back to them. The Ministry hasn't really answered your question IMHO
