Concern Over Delays in English–Maori Language Policy Changes
aminnz made this Official Information request to Winston Peters
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for aminnz to read recent responses and update the status.
From: aminnz
Dear Winston Peters,
I’m a strong supporter of yours, which is why I feel particularly disappointed. You made clear commitments that have yet to be delivered. You stated that the English language would be prioritised first, followed by Maori, and that certain place names changed under the previous government would be reviewed and corrected. Yet even now, official government platforms still present Maori first, with English appearing secondary (https://www.govt.nz/). Shouldn’t this have been addressed as a priority?
More broadly, to avoid the kind of division we’ve seen in recent years, why not introduce clear legislation affirming English as the primary official language, with Maori recognised alongside it? This would remove ambiguity around the status of both English and Māori, and help prevent ongoing confusion or disagreement that can affect national unity.
Yours faithfully,
Ami
