Dear Jeff

Religious instruction in State primary and intermediate schools me ngâ
kura

You have previously written to the Ministry or Minister of Education on
the topic of religion in schools.  Because of your interest in this issue,
we thought you might be interested in the draft guidelines on religious
instruction in state primary and intermediate schools and kura we have
just released for consultation.

The draft guidelines are not designed to limit a board’s choice as to
whether it decides to close its school to offer religious instruction and
observance. Rather, the draft guidelines are intended to help schools who
wish to close for this purpose, to do so in a way that complies with the
law and reduces the chance that children and their families will be
subject to unintended discrimination.

The draft guidelines aim to make it clearer to:

·     school boards what their legal obligations are regarding religious
instruction, and how they can meet those obligations

·     children and their parents, caregivers, family and whânau what their
rights are, and what they can expect from their school regarding religious
instruction.

The draft guidelines and consultation document are on our website:
[1]https://education.govt.nz/draft-guidelin...

Submissions close on 7 December 2018.

Please contact [2][email address] with any questions you
might have.

Ngâ mihi
