Question regarding entry to MBCHB
Vivian made this Official Information request to University of Otago
The request was successful.
From: Vivian
Dear University of Otago,
I was wondering whether the previous statistic years for entry into MBCHB of an average median GPA score of 90-99 for a non-waitlist offer for admission, means that anyone who has a gpa between these ranges will be guaranteed an entry? Or is this dependent on the cohort, and does only a certain number of applicants get selected each year? Etc. If 2026 entry has more than 200 applicants between the average median gpa range between 90-99 will they all be offered an entry, or will the cut score increase to etc 94-99.
Yours faithfully, Emily Jones

Would it be possible to please clarify your request? You have asked to know whether applicants to the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) programme offered by the University of Otago will gain an automatic non-waitlist offer should they achieve within a certain range of average academic scores (for example between 90-99).
The maximum number of domestic and international student places available across all admissions categories in the 2025 MB ChB programme is capped in any given year. The figures you may have seen may reflect the scores achieved by applicants who received a non-waitlist offer in a particular year. However, these figures are dependent on the scores achieved by the particular cohort who applied in that year, and do vary from year to year.
Please also note that there are three admissions categories for the (MB ChB) programme: Health Sciences First Year (HSFY), Graduate and Alternative; and several pathways within each of these categories. These are detailed on the University’s website: https://www.otago.ac.nz/healthsciences/s.... The range of average academic scores achieved by cohorts within these categories and pathway also vary in any given year, and from year to year.
Is this the information you are after? Alternatively, if there is something else you are interested in, it would be appreciated if you could please clarify this for us.
We will wait to hear back from you before we continue to process your request.
Kâ mihi, Jo
