Te Rua Mahara o te Kāwanatanga - Response for request ARC209949

Archives New Zealand Te Rua Mahara o te Kāwanatanga - ARC209949 response
Our response to your request [1]ARC209949  is:

Kia ora Jonpaul Cohen,

Thank you for your enquiry.

As your request concerns historic records that have been transferred to the holdings of
Archives New Zealand it has been considered a research enquiry.

Concerning the 1,731 refected and 727accepted applications cited by the Holocaust Centre of
New Zealand - it should be possible to access this information but it would be helpful if
Holocaust Centre has a record of the sources used to arrive at this figure. I have attempted
a number of searches of our online finding aid [2]Collections Search but I have not
identified any single obvious or readily available source that would enable access to records
of these applications.

Archives New Zealand holds a variety of records individual alien (i.e. refugees and migrants
who were not deemed to be British subjects) in series 493 and 504, however these are
primarily individual files and index cards in the name of the individual subjects. While the
files often note the original (or then current) State that the subject of the record resided
in prior to their departure from that State the files and their associated index cards did
not normally document the religion of circumstances (e.g. refugee or migrant) of the
individuals in question (at least, within the title or description of the individual
records).

To research the series 493 and 504 records held at the Wellington office of Archives New
Zealand is possible but would likely require considerable time.

Another alternative might be to search across other records such as the series [3]8837
registers of Permanent Entry or the series [4]8011 permit books if post-war applications are
relevant to your research.

Hopefully the Holocaust Centre may be able to provide further details about the records and
sourcees that have been utilised previously. Once we have identified the records and
collections that will be of use to you we will be pleased to make them available to you.

Please note however the Archives New Zealand currently has limited services available

We areunable to create copies of records as our [5]Te Maeatanga Digitisation programme has
closed. The programme was how we created copies, but it had time-limited funding and closed
in 2024

From 1 September you will be able to visit and access records held at the Wellington office
of Archives New Zealnad - all that you (or the person visiting) will require is a
registration with our Collections Search site. You can find a guide to registering
here: [6]https://collections.archives.govt.nz/en/...

Please also use our [7]online preorder form to request records in advance of a visit to any
office of Archives New Zealand.

While many records will be available from 1 September some records will be unavailable at
times while our move takes place. By sending through a preorder request up to a month in
advance of a visit we should be able to advise whether the records you wish to access can be
made available to view.

I hope that this information is of some use.

Kind regards
