Dentistry clinical grading

From: Morganne Chambers
Dear University of Otago,
I am writing to request clarification regarding the clinical grading system used in dent461, which contributes 40% to the final grade. The scale assigns 100% for “Outstanding” and 75% for “Good,” creating a 25% drop between two levels that both represent competent clinical performance. Given that these grades are subjective and can vary between tutors, this large gap can disproportionately affect overall marks. I would appreciate understanding the rationale behind this grading structure and how the Faculty ensures fairness and consistency across students.
I am also wondering why the distinction ability for a degree has been taken away from Dentistry?
Lastly I am wondering how the honours students are selected for fifth year
Yours faithfully,
Morganne Chambers
