Literacy requirements for UE : Recent news article on "number-illiterate-uni-students-crisis-level"

Edwin Bruce made this Official Information request to New Zealand Qualifications Authority

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Edwin Bruce to read a recent response and update the status.

From: Edwin Bruce

Dear New Zealand Qualifications Authority,

I have recently read a news release regarding English language literacy at Universities.

Refer https://www.thepress.co.nz/nz-news/36046...

On your site you state...
"To meet the University Entrance literacy requirements you need 10 credits from the list of standards below (5 credits in reading and 5 credits in writing)."
from
https://www2.nzqa.govt.nz/ncea/understan...

Can you please confirm/explain the policy purpose of this requirement eg to ensure students are English literate when they go to University.

I am interested as I have been advised that non English speakers at secondary schools may use translation tools to both read the assessment and write the answers. This is for assessments that carry reading and writing credits.

Yours faithfully,

P Bruce
