Inclusion for Children with Special needs

Janet made this Official Information request to Paremata School

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Janet to read recent responses and update the status.

From: Janet

Dear Paremata School,

I am writing to ask for further information on your policy 'Inclusion for Children with Special needs".

Could you please advise:
- how you determine which children fall within the scope of your policy
- what the monitoring consists of under the IEP process so for example are parents given more regular reports, included in conversations etc
- how you determine the effectiveness of your policy and is this reported to the Board of Trustees? If it is I would appreciated copies of any reports for the last 12 months.
- have you received any complaints from parents with children with special needs in relation to their inclusion at school, bullying or educational attainment and if so how many, what was the nature of the complaint and what was the resolution?

Yours faithfully,

Janet

Dear Paremata School,

Good morning,

I’m sure you are aware of your obligations under the Official Information Act and with this request I haven’t even had the courtesy of an acknowledgement.

As this request is now overdue, can you please let me know when I will receive the information otherwise I will have no option other than to make a complaint to the Ombudsman.

Yours faithfully,

Janet

Just letting you know your e-mail relating to the special needs inclusion
OIA was sent in the school holidays and went straight to the office spam
folder so we never saw it.
I suspect that the unusual e-mail  address and the fact you didn't use
your surname means google has filtered this into spam.

Dear Bryce Coleman,

Thank you for the update Bryce and I am aware that I sent this during the school holidays but was wanting to check re: an acknowledgement as I received one to my original request once school returned.

I assume you are intending extending the timeframe for this request?

Yours sincerely,

Janet

Kia ora Janet
here is my response to your questions
Could you please advise:
 - how you determine which children fall within the scope of your policy
These are students  who are funded by the Ministry of Education  for
their disability.
- what the monitoring consists of under the IEP process so for example are
parents given more regular reports, included in conversations etc
Parents whose children  have an IEP meet with the SENCO Teacher and
learning Support staff once or twice per term depending on the level of
need to discuss the learning goals and progress. Outside of this these
children are part of the school's normal reporting cycle of two reports
per year.
- how you determine the effectiveness of your policy and is this reported
to the Board of Trustees? If it is I would appreciated copies of any
reports for the last 12 months.
We don't report separately  to the BOT of Trustees on the children with
Special Needs. The policy is reviewed in a 3 year cycle along with all the
other school policies.
- have you received any complaints from parents with children with special
needs in relation to their inclusion at school, bullying or educational
attainment and if so how many, what was the nature of the complaint and
what was the resolution?
No we haven't received any complaints from parents with children with
special needs. If we did, we would follow the school's complaint process.
Thanks so much
Bryce
