Number of prisoners currently segregated due to gender/sex/sexuality
Sophie Buchanan made this Official Information request to Department of Corrections
The request was partially successful.
From: Sophie Buchanan
Dear Department of Corrections,
Under the Official Information Act, please disclose the number of prisoners currently in segregation from the mainstream prison population due to sex/gender, perceived sex/gender, sexuality, or perceived sexuality, whether due to assessment of risk to them by Corrections staff or at the request of the inmate.
If possible, please also disclose the number of current prisoners who have been in protective segregation due to sex/gender/sexuality, even if they are currently not segregated.
If the Department does not keep records of the reason for segregation, please provide the number of inmates currently segregated for any reason, and/or the DOC's general statistics on segregation for the past 5 years.
If information needs to be withheld to respect the privacy of individuals, please excise/redact that information and disclose what you can.
Nāku noa,
Sophie Buchanan

Dear Info@Corrections,
I am following up on my request for information on the number of prisoners currently segregated due to gender/sex/sexuality. By law the Department of Corrections was obliged to respond to this request promptly and by July 17th; therefore I really must insist on an answer.
Yours sincerely,
Sophie Buchanan
From: Sophie Buchanan
Dear Department of Corrections,
I sent an email to you on the 20th of June 2015 under the Official Information Act, requesting the number of prisoners currently in segregation from the mainstream prison population due to sex/gender, perceived sex/gender, sexuality, or perceived sexuality, whether due to assessment by Corrections staff of risk to them or at the request of the inmate; the number of current prisoners
who have been in protective segregation due to sex/gender/sexuality, even if they are currently not segregated; the number of inmates currently segregated for any reason; and/or the DOC's general statistics on segregation for the past 5 years.
A response to this request is well overdue as by law, under all circumstances, the Department should have replied by now. My follow-up email on the 20th of July 2015 was also ignored. It is now the 17th of August 2015; please respond ASAP.
Yours faithfully,
Sophie Buchanan

This question was answered along with another I asked about the conditions of segregation, and I presume this is why the Department of Corrections has not answered directly.

"The Department does not compile or collect data on the segregation of prisoners due to their sex, gender or sexuality."
