Grade Distributions

John made this Official Information request to University of Otago

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for John to read recent responses and update the status.

From: John

Dear University of Otago,

I am writing to request information under the Official Information Act regarding the distribution of grades for all papers assessed and graded in the first semester of 2024 at the University of Otago.

I kindly ask that you provide the number of students who received each grade (A+, A, A-, etc.) for each paper, as well as the total number of students who passed each paper. Additionally, please include the total number of students who sat for each paper.

If the grade data for any paper is not yet available, please leave those entries blank while still providing the grade distributions for the others. If possible, I would appreciate a follow-up by the 30th of September with updated information if all grades have not yet been finalized.

Thank you for your time and effort in gathering this data.

Yours faithfully,

John

Tçnâ koe John,

We refer to your information request dated 27 August 2024 made under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act). You have requested the following information:

Your request in its current form is very broad and therefore we are likely to need to propose a charge or decline the request pursuant to section 18(f) of the Act as it will require substantial research and collation. This is particularly so given the University offers at least 700+ papers in the first semester of 2024, across undergraduate and postgraduate subjects and qualifications.

However, this may not be necessary if the scope of your request can be clarified and/or limited so as to make the request practically manageable. Would you be agreeable to limiting the scope of your request to 100-, 200- and 300-level papers only? We note that many of our papers offered at 400-level or above have low enrolments or are pass/fail only, and therefore we would not be able to provide detailed grade distributions for these papers.

We will wait to hear back from you before we continue to process your request. Please note, any clarification or amendment of a request is considered to be a new request for the purpose of calculating the maximum statutory timeframe for response – see section 15(1AA) of the Act.

Ngâ mihi
Jo Pearson

From: John

Dear UoO - Official Information Act,

Thank you for confirming my request. Restricting to 100, 200, and 300-level papers works for me. Apologies for the initial oversight.

Yours sincerely,

John
