Details of Extra rate increase 2023
Ashwin Chauhan made this Official Information request to Waikato District Council
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Ashwin Chauhan to read recent responses and update the status.
From: Ashwin Chauhan
Dear Waikato District Council,
I would like to know the decision behind the extra rate increase from July 2023 on top of the agreed 3.5% excusing inflation and interest rates, General public is already in hot water with the cost of living, high interest rates, and on top of this council increase, I am sure some people are already struggling,
What was the voting based on and, why it's anonymous, Why it wasn't an open vote since voters are elected members of the council, elected by the local public. I believe being a rate payer and a voter, We have rights to know who is voting against the public interest
Hope you can provide this details to make it more transparent to open public
Yours faithfully,
Ashwin Chauhan

Waikato District Council
Kia ora Ashwin,
I refer to your request for information which the Waikato District Council
(Council) received on Sunday 11 June 2023 via fyi.org.nz. We have
processed your request in accordance with the Local Government Official
Information and Meetings Act 1987 (LGOIMA). We are pleased to be able to
communicate a decision today.
Request
Your request is as follows:
“I would like to know the decision behind the extra rate increase from
July 2023 on top of the agreed 3.5% excusing inflation and interest rates,
General public is already in hot water with the cost of living, high
interest rates, and on top of this council increase, I am sure some people
are already struggling,
What was the voting based on and, why it's anonymous, Why it wasn't an
open vote since voters are elected members of the council, elected by the
local public. I believe being a rate payer and a voter, We have rights to
know who is voting against the public interest”
Decision
Council’s decision is to provide the information you have requested, and
responds as follows;
Both the draft annual plan and annual plan were adopted in an open session
of Council. The report on the draft annual plan which proposed the 7%
increase is included in the open supplementary agenda as item 6.3 on the
following link here [1]here. The minutes for this meeting can also be
found on page 5 of the minutes (once again open on the following link) –
[2]here .
The final annual plan was reported to the 28 June Council meeting – again
held in open section of the meeting – in particular page 29 of the agenda
refers to the general rates increase, for which the link can be found
[3]here. The Council resolved in open session:
Resolved: (Crs Beavis/Reeve)
THAT the Waikato District Council:
a. approves the targeted rate for the Whatawhata Community Hall to
be reduced from $70 to $57 per annum, and
b. approves the changed wording received from Cr Beavis in regards
to Tamahere.
c. adopts the 2023/24 Annual Plan as presented, with any minor
edits or corrections as necessary being delegated to the Chief Executive
for sign off.
CARRIED
WDC2306/29
Both the March resolution and the June resolution were held in open
session and carried on voices with no dissenting votes to be recorded.
That concludes our response to your request.
As with all LGOIMA responses, you have the right to seek a review by the
Ombudsman of this decision. Information about this process is available at
[4]www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
