Have the Te Urewera Board or the Tuhoe people denied DOC staff access to Te Urewera in 2021?
Marc Smith made this Official Information request to Department of Conservation
The request was successful.
From: Marc Smith
Dear Department of Conservation,
I refer to question 3 of my request made to your Department on 28 November 2021. The link to my request and your response is here: https://fyi.org.nz/request/17741-te-urew...
Question 3 was about the legal basis for the Te Urewera Board to deny DOC staff access into Te Urewera to do maintenance work. The below press article stated: "Sources have told Stuff that Tūhoe haven’t been letting DOC staff into the area to do maintenance work, preferring to have their young people upskilled to do it."
https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/3004562...
As you will be aware, you transferred question 3 of my request dated 28 November 2021 to the Te Urewera Board. However, I am asking a different question now. My question is:
Have the Te Urewera Board or the Tuhoe people denied DOC staff access to Te Urewera in any month of 2021? A simple 'yes' or 'no' is sufficient. I believe DOC must have this on record as it is a significant event for DOC staff to be denied access to an area they have a right to access.
This question cannot be transferred to the Te Urewera Board under section 14 of the Act as it directly relates to DOC and its staff.
Yours faithfully,
Marc Smith
