Classification system review

Scott made this Official Information request to New Zealand Security Intelligence Service

The request was successful.

From: Scott

Dear New Zealand Security Intelligence Service,

I would like to make a request for information relating to the recent refresh of the classification system and the release of the New Zealand Government Information Security Classification System Policy 2022:

ONE: The PSR website refers to a review of the classification system that included receiving feedback from stakeholder agencies in 2019 and 2020:

“We recognize that simplifying the System was identified as a high priority by all of the agencies involved in the review project in 2019 and 2020. That review found that simplifying the system will require significant resources across government to undertake. We did not receive approval from Cabinet to commit those resources at this time.”

Quote on this page:

I would like to request a copy of this review or report that summarises this feedback and contains the finding referred to above.

TWO: It is noted on this page of the PSR website:

https://protectivesecurity.govt.nz/class...

that the “Security and Intelligence Board agreed to the 2022 policy on 23 March 2022”. I would like to request a copy of whatever report, presentation or other material was presented to the Security and Intelligence Board at this time to inform their approval of the updated classification policy.

THREE: If it isn’t included in the above material, I would also like to request a list of all stakeholders, government and non-government, consulted with as part of the review process.

Yours faithfully,

Scott

Dear Scott

We refer to your official information request dated 27 September 2022 for information related to the classification system review.

The Official Information Act 1982 requires that we advise you of our decision on your request no later than 20 working days after the day that we received your request. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to meet that time limit and we are, therefore, writing to notify you of an extension of the time to make our decision, to 23 November 2022.

This extension is necessary because consultations necessary to make a decision on your request are such that a proper response cannot reasonably be made within the original time limit.

If you wish to discuss any aspect of your request with us, including this decision, please feel free to contact [NZSIS request email].

You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.

Kind regards

NZSIS
