Total spent on Google Data for lockdown compliance statistics.

Linda Dalgleish made this Official Information request to Ministry of Health

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Linda Dalgleish to read a recent response and update the status.

From: Linda Dalgleish

Dear Ministry of Health,

In April 2020, Jacinda Ardern was quoted as stating that lockdown compliance, according to Google Data, had been very good.

https://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/news/nation...

How much was spent on buying this Google Data for the national lockdown in early 2020? How much was spent on Google Data during the lockdown of August 2021?
How much has been spent on Google Data for the entire duration of the Covid-19 pandemic.

To what extent have residents of New Zealand been tracked by this data?

Yours faithfully,

Linda Dalgleish

 Tçnâ koe Linda

Thank you for your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the
Act) to the Ministry of Health (the Ministry) on 14 April 2022 for:

“How much was spent on buying this Google Data for the national lockdown
in early 2020? How much was spent on Google Data during the lockdown of
August 2021?
How much has been spent on Google Data for the entire duration of the
Covid-19 pandemic.

To what extent have residents of New Zealand been tracked by this data?”

The Ministry understands that the Prime Minister was referring to
information that is publicly available at:
[1]https://www.google.com/covid19/mobility/.

Google does not provide a service called “Google Data”. The Ministry uses
data provided by Google for a range of purposes, such as analytics
information that enables the Ministry to monitor “hits” on its website. We
are not able to advise about money spent by other government agencies.

The Ministry does not track individuals using Google data. Therefore, part
of your request has been refused under section 18(g)(ii) of the Act as the
information requested is not held by the Ministry and it does not consider
it is more closely related to the functions of another agency subject to
the Act. If you are referring to the NZ COVID-19 Tracer app, you may find
more information on this at:
[2]www.health.govt.nz/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-resources-and-tools/nz-covid-tracer-app.

If you are able to be more specific about the type of data you are
interested in, we may be able to determine how much the Ministry spent, or
where your request may be better directed. If you wish to make a further
request for information, the Official Information Act team would be happy
to assist you in making a new, refined request for information. Their
contact details are: [3][email address].

Under section 28(3) of the Act, you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to
review any decisions made under this request. The Ombudsman may be
contacted by email at: [4][email address] or by calling 0800
802 602.
