University of Otago

We refer to your information request dated 19 December 2021 made under the
Official Information Act 1982 (Act).

We have decided to grant your request.

Items 1 to 8 of your request

However, with regards to the information that you have requested for items
1 to 8 of your request, the University's Medical School has not yet
confirmed final numbers for its 2022 MB ChB programme. This includes final
admission numbers under the Graduate category and each of the
sub-category/priority groups.  Therefore the GPA scores are not available
either. The data will not be known and therefore will not be available
until the end of March 2022 - as student offers continue until the end of
the third week of teaching in Semester One. The reasons for late offers
relate to students declining entry to the programme after it has commenced
(which is permitted provided it is done by the end of the third week) or
having to defer for unanticipated reasons.

Once this information is available, we will be able to provide you with
the final admission numbers (total number of applications and total
admitted) and the minimum academic scores for all offers.

Please note that for privacy and student wellbeing reasons, the
University's standard practice is not to report on numbers where those
numbers are below 5. Where the numbers are very low, there is a risk that
the identity of those individuals can be determined/inferred. Outcomes for
groups with fewer than 5 individuals will be reported as "<5" (fewer than
5), and academic scores are not provided for such groups (reported as
withheld ("W/H"). Withholding this information is consistent with section
9(2)(a) of the Act, and we do not consider that the reasons for
withholding this information is outweighed by other consideration which
would make it desirable in the public interest to make the information
available.

Item 9 of your request

In response to item 9 of your request - "What the UCAT cutoff was for 2022
MB ChB applicants”  - The UCAT selection criteria for the MB ChB programme
is set annually by the University's Medical Admissions Committee.  The
UCAT threshold set in 2021 for entry into the 2022 MB ChB programme is:

•             Verbal Reasoning - 20th percentile and above

•             Situational Judgement - 10th percentile and above

•             No threshold was set for the Decision Making, Quantitative
Reasoning or Abstract Reasoning sections.

For entry into the 2022 MB ChB programme, UCAT scores are not being used
for any equity groups other than the Rural equity group, as well as the
General category in the Health Sciences First Year (HSFY) admissions
category. No UCAT threshold is required for the Mâori, Indigenous Pacific,
Refugee or Socio-economic equity groups.

We will be in touch with regards to the remaining requested information
(items 1 to 8) once this data has been confirmed and is available.

If you are not satisfied with our response to your information request,
section 28(3) of the Act provides you with the right to ask an Ombudsman
to investigate and review this response. However, we would welcome the
opportunity to discuss any concerns with you first.
