Deaths from current outbreak

Catherine Patterson made this Official Information request to Ministry of Health

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Catherine Patterson to read a recent response and update the status.

From: Catherine Patterson

Dear Ministry of Health,

Of the 41 deaths currently from the outbreak, how many were hospitalised because they contracted COVID, and how many of them tested positive but were hospitalised for other reasons?

How many had underlying health issues?

How many died “of” covid rather than “with” a positive test?

Of the younger deaths what were the main causes listed?

Yours faithfully,

Jess

Kia ora Jess

Thank you for your request for official information received by the
Ministry of Health (the Ministry) on 26 November 2021 for:

Of the 41 deaths currently from the outbreak, how many were hospitalised
because they contracted COVID, and how many of them tested positive but
were hospitalised for other reasons?

This part of your request is for private medical information and is
therefore refused under section 9(2)(a) of the Act to protect the privacy
of natural persons. The Ministry has considered the countervailing public
interest in release in making this decision and consider that it does not
outweigh the need to withhold at this time.

How many had underlying health issues?

How many died “of” covid rather than “with” a positive test?

Of the younger deaths what were the main causes listed?

As at 30 November 2021, 44 deaths of COVID-19 cases have been recorded in
New Zealand.

Of the 26 deaths prior to the current outbreak, all deaths were classified
as due to COVID-19.

As at 30 November 2021, there have been 18 deaths of active cases since
August 2021. Four have been classified as due to COVID-19, one was not due
to COVID-19 and the rest remain under investigation.

The Ministry is providing an updated table outlining the 44 COVID-19
deaths by comorbidities.

Table 1. COVID-19 deaths by comorbidity

Pre-existing condition   Yes   No
Cardiovascular disease   9   35
Chronic lung disease   6   38
Diabetes   6   38
immunodeficiency   0   44
Liver Disease   0   44
Malignancy   1   43
Neurological or neuromuscular
disease   4   40
Other underlying condition   8   36
postPartum   0   44
pregnancy   0   44
Renal failure   2   42

The Ministry of Health will not provide details of any deaths that were
not due to COVID-19.

Under section 28(3) of the Act, you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to
review any decisions made under this request. The Ombudsman may be
contacted by email at: [1][email address] or by calling 0800
802 602.
