Thank you for your email. As you know, the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen)
vaccine has received provisional approval from Medsafe. However, the
Pfizer Comirnaty vaccine is the only vaccine that Cabinet has approved for
use in New Zealand. Before a COVID-19 vaccine can be used in New Zealand,
Cabinet must agree on a ‘decision to use’. There is currently no timeframe
for this. 

The Janssen vaccine is different in nature to the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine,
as Janssen is a viral vector vaccine. Viral vector vaccines use a modified
version of a different virus (the vector) to deliver important
instructions to our cells. While no decisions have been made to date about
the use of the Janssen vaccine in New Zealand, we recognise that there may
be merit in providing a different vaccine for those individuals unable to,
or hesitant to take an mRNA-based vaccine. 

Under section 28(3) of the Act you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to
review any decisions made under this request. The Ombudsman may be
