Kia ora Nigel

Thank you for your email received 19 October 2021 in which you submitted a request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) to Hon Chris Hipkins, Minister for COVID-19 Response. You have requested:

“Could you please provide a breakdown of the new COVID CASES for 18th and 19th October 2021 as follow:
1. number who were unvaccinated
2. number who were vaccinated 1st shot
3. number who were vaccinated 2nd shot
4. were these cases all detected using the PCR Test? If so, how many cycles was used as the detection protocol.”

Information regarding the vaccination status of the current COVID-19 cases can be found on the Ministry of Health’s website: https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/dise....

I am advised by the Ministry of Health that all cases were identified by PCR testing. For the RT-PCR assays being used in New Zealand laboratories, the number of cycles for which the assays run is 40. The number of cycles for which any RT-PCR assay runs is a pre-programmed parameter in the software of the analyser used for the test and cannot be changed by the individual laboratories using the assays. Regardless of when the threshold is reached, the assay will run for the full 40 cycles.

Under section 28(3) of the Act you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review any decisions made under this request. The Ombudsman may be contacted by email at: [email address] or by calling 0800 802 602.

Ngâ mihi

Tiffany Vail | Private Secretary, Health
