David Nicholas made this Official Information request to Ministry of Māori Development

The request was partially successful.

From: David Nicholas

Dear Ministry of Māori Development,

I am wanting to ind out what opinions you have in regard to the viewpoint that Maori were not the first to settle in NZ and what impact this might have on the Treaty of Waitangi.

The Chinese, Portugese, Spanish and Celts are alleged to have arrived in NZ, long before Maori settled here. There are artifacts in the Waihopai Forest, that apparently been embargoed by archives NZ. There are red haired Maori in Northland which might indicate a Celtic ancestry.

Yours faithfully,

David Nicholas
