Foreign dignitaries vehicles

Paul Jones made this Official Information request to Ministry of Transport

The request was successful.

From: Paul Jones

Dear Ministry of Transport,

Concerning the case of a foreign dignitary visiting New Zealand and bringing their own vehicle with them for transport on NZ roads.

Would you outline the application/process involved that enables them to do this?

Does their vehicle require a NZ registration number plate?

Please note that I am not talking about people in Diplomatic posts bringing their own car from overseas for use whilst employed at an embassy in NZ, I am limiting this to the case of a short term visit such as from the President of the United States coming with their Presidential Car for a week.

Yours faithfully,

Paul Jones

Kia ora Paul

Thank you for your email in regard to importing a vehicle temporarily.
Your request has been referred to Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency for
response as the matter falls under our responsibilities.

Any vehicle being imported temporarily would following the process
outlined here:
[1]https://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicles/import....

The vehicle does not need New Zealand registration plates (also called
‘number plates’ or in some overseas jurisdictions, ‘licence plates’). It
must continue to display the overseas plates.

We trust the above information is of assistance.
