Candidate returns of donations and expenses for the 2020 general election
are due to be filed with the Commission by 17 February 2021 and will be
made publicly available on [1]www.elections.nz after the deadline. As the
election expense information you have requested for Deborah Burnside will
soon be publicly available your request is refused under section 18(d) of
the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act). Please note not all candidate
campaign costs have to be reported in the candidate’s return. In
accordance with Part 6A of the Electoral Act 1993, candidates must report
election expenses for advertising that promoted their candidacy published
during the regulated period (18 August to 16 October 2020 for the 2020
general election). Candidates are not required to report their meeting
expenditure i.e. the cost of hiring halls for meetings or the cost of
travelling to meetings.
You have the right under section 28(3) of the Act to make a complaint to
the Ombudsman if you are not satisfied with the response to your request.
