From: STV researcher
Dear Dunedin City Council,
I would like a quote for the cost of retrieving electronically the raw data from the DCC local body elections 2019.
The data requested is in the form of each voter record of the voting preferences selected.
I wish to research the effectiveness of the STV system.
Voter names are NOT requested just the unidentified individual voter responses.
Yours faithfully,

Dunedin City Council
Dear Mr Gray,
I refer to your request below for a quote for the cost of retrieving
electronically the raw data from the DCC local body elections in 2019 and
each voter record.
The Local Electoral Act 2001 governs the conduct of local elections and
the Act provides for the length of time that voting documents must be kept
following the election if there is a recount of the election.
Section 89 of the Local Electoral Act 2001 provides that following the
completion of the count all voting documents are sent to the Registrar of
the District Court and they are held securely for a period of 21 days.
Following this, if there is no recount the voting documents are then
destroyed. This only happens once the time limit has passed applications
of recounts or petitions for inquiry.
Your request is therefore declined pursuant to section 17 (g)(i) as the
information is not held by the local authority or any other organisation.
As we have declined to provide the information requested you are advised
that you have the right to seek a review of this decision by the Office of
the Ombudsman (0800 802 602) or email: [1][email address]
Yours sincerely
Clare Sullivan
