Thank you for contacting the Ministry of Education. I have been asked to
respond to your OIA request of 14 May regarding vaccinations in primary
schools during Alert Level 2.
We have seen a lot of misinformation circulating on social media and other
forms of media regarding flu vaccinations in schools. Please be assured
that neither the Police, Oranga Tamariki nor anyone else have been given
the authority to uplift children from school if they appear unwell and
forcibly test for COVID-19, and administer medication including flu
vaccinations.
The decision to vaccinate a child remains with parents and caregivers.
The is no law that requires vaccinations.
You may be interested to know that on [1]21 May we sent a School Bulletin
out to all school leaders addressing this misinformation to help reassure
communities.
We appreciate this is an unprecedented time for all New Zealanders and
their whânau. I can assure you that public health and wellbeing is a
priority for both the Government. Schools and early learning services are
safe environments for children, young people and staff as hygiene habits
will be strong and safe, sensible practices will be in place.
Additionally, we know who is in these environments and have the ability to
contact trace if required.
We will continue to provide schools, parents and whânau detailed and
factual guidance that is in line with public health advice as it becomes
available. You may find more information on what guidance we have provided
to schools via our [2]School Bulletin’s for School leaders or [3]our
website.
I hope this information has been helpful. Thank you again for writing to
us.
