[FYI request #7335 email]
Dear James
Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987
Re: fireworks related noise complaints
I refer to your email, which we received on 26 February 2018, requesting information about
fireworks related noise complaints.
We extended the time to respond to your request by email on the 26 March, under LGOIMA
section 14(1)(b) to allow time for final consultation.
Please see our response below.
1: The number of fireworks related noise complaints to Auckland Council? Detailed
information by year and date would be appreciated. 2012-2107.
Please see below for information that went to the Regulatory Committee on 8 March
regarding fireworks and number of complaints.
• Nature of issue is comparable with 2013. Peak times are Guy Fawkes, Chinese New
Year, and Diwali.
• 447 complaints received from February 2017 to February 2018 mostly in November
around Guy Fawkes.
• This is one of the biggest nuisance and safety concerns for Aucklanders (37 per cent
surveyed saw the issue in the past year, and 77 per cent of those felt annoyed, angry
or threatened).
• Most complaints relate to noise from private residences which are handled by noise
control.
This information is publicly available and can be found on page 7 of Attachment A,
which can be accessed on page 31 of the document link below:

The other statistics 2012 -2016 would be extremely difficult to recover as Auckland Council
was stil running legacy systems then that don’t necessarily allow noise complaints about
fireworks to be separated out from other noise complaint source. Accordingly, this
information is refused under Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987
