Ngā Tauira Māori – Bi-annual Funding
Event 1: Māori Day
Purpose:
What is the event for?
Māori Day is a day dedicated to uplifting and celebrating Te Ao Māori (The Māori culture). The
event provides students with the opportunity to join us in a day filled with special
performances such as kapa haka, solo/duet singing performances from some of our
students, a maurākau showcase, as well as guest speakers including industry leading Māori
Members of Parliament. We also bring in different stalls including other associations of the
university such as SPIES, Te Rākau Ture, and Te Mana Pakihi. We also bring in external
entities such as EY and PWC to have a presence there. We finish the day off with an opening
act followed by a main headlining performance by a renowned artist/group typically from
New Zealand to further make the day enjoyable.
What will be happening at the event?
The event will take place at the quad, level 2 of the Student Union Building. A live show
hosted by a special guest MC runs throughout the day that includes:

Performances from different associations, students, and other groups.
●
Challenges/games with crowd engagement, with prizes included.
E.g. Weetbix and fizzy eating competition
● Introduction to the
stalls/stands situated around the event, where people are
introduced to the different associations and companies present. There is also an
opportunity for people to interact with the stalls at any point during the day. This year
will have a stall with a
barber giving
free haircuts.
● A
free hāngī (traditional ground oven cooked meal) and
paraoa parai (fry bread) at
lunchtime for anyone to help themselves to.

Guest speakers who are Māori MPs to discuss societal issues, Māori issues, as well
as an open Q&A session.
Hineahuone will be used as a
Green Room for the entirety of the event, where we can
manaaki our performers by providing a plethora of snacks, food, and refreshments as well as
a space for them to prepare. This ensures our performers are ready and well-nourished

Since Māori Day runs throughout the day and into the night, people wil come and go as they
please, therefore an exact estimate of attendees cannot be accurately calculated, however,
our event is capable of facilitating over 150 people at a time. While it is a day of celebrating
the Māori culture, the event itself is open for anyone regardless of who they are to come
along and enjoy.
Who benefits from the event? Why is it important?
The event targets Māori students at the University however anyone who attends Māori day
will also benefit tremendously as it provides a chance for people to connect with Māori
culture, engage with their communities, and also provides a networking space to meet like
minded individuals as wel as Māori students at the university.
Impact of the Event
Overall, Māori Day strengthens cultural pride among our tauira Māori, while giving everyone
attending a chance to experience Te Ao Māori in an engaging and interactive way. Through
performances, games, guest speakers, traditional food, and networking, the event promotes
cultural awareness and fosters a strong sense of community and inclusivity across the
university.

We are seeking
$6,700 to cover the cost of the Māori Graduation event, which will be
allocated as follows:

Venue and Green Room setup:
$4,100 for the decorations and set up of the green
room (used to host live show performers and Te Pō Māori acts), and set up and
production of the live show.
●
Catering (food and refreshments):
$2,600 to provide catering of refreshments and
kai for performers for both Te Rā Māori and Te Pō Māori, as well as Hāngī and steam
pudding for the attendees of Māori Day during lunchtime.
Event 2: Te Huinga Tauira
Purpose:
What is the event for?
Huinga Tauira is an event that brings Māori students from around the country together for an
opportunity to connect and engage in networking among each other. This event provides a
space for the Māori students to have an exposure to their cultural world and share that
experience with each other. We aim to strengthen the bond between these Māori students,
while encouraging health and the path of education, as well as hoping to strengthen future
generations.
What will be happening at the event?
Te Huinga Tauira will involve various activities and events within itself:
1. Kapa Haka Competition where each Māori student association will perform on stage
showing their own immersiveness in their culture.
2. Sports of different kinds, including Ki-o-rahi, where all students will be facing off
against each other in friendly scrimmages.
3. Manu Korero where each association will select students to represent them in a
Māori speech competition. These speeches will be spoken in both Māori and English,
and target topics affecting the people.
4. AGM where the next members for the overarching Māori student committee(Te Mana
Ākonga) will be voted in and selected for the upcoming year.
Expected Attendees
Each association will be bringing up to 35 students, and as there are 8 different associations
attending, this will total 280 total students. Te Mana Ākonga will also be there, with a total of
5 members in their party, which wil bring the total of students to around 285.
Event goal

Promoting Māori Culture, including language and tikanga.

Building relationships among the Māori youth in education, encouraging
collaboration and networking.

Providing Cultural Support to all Māori students, further promoting the Māori
culture, along with giving the students a sense of home in their journeys through this
path of education.
This event aims to encourage our Māori youth in their navigation through university and retain
our Māori whānau through social, cultural, and educational support.
Who benefits from the event? Why is it important?

All Attending Students will benefit from this event. As many Māori come from
backgrounds where education hasn’t been a part of, this event is a way of not just
giving a break to the students from the heaviness of study and pressure of education,
but to show them that university isn’t just about submitting assignments. University
doesn’t mean your culture has to be hindered or held back. And university is a way of
helping you build yourself into who you want to be. This event gives the students
exposure to the bright side of following the path of education, and can be the event
that helps keep the students on track.
Impact of the Event

increasing feelings of belonging. This will allow the students to feel more supported
academically and personally.

something that they feel their hard work in study can pay off for leading up to their
final graduation. Students look forward to this event, where they can let go for a
period of time and engage in social and cultural activities that give them a sense of
home and happiness, further increasing the likelihood that they will be willing to
complete their studies.

Strengthened bonds among the students of Ngā Tauira Māori. This will allow for NTM
to remain a safe and welcoming community to all, emphasising that NTM is a second
home for Māori students at UOA.

The projected cost for Ngā Tauira Māori to send a cohort to Te Huinga Tauira 2025 is
estimated at
$5,615. As the fee payment proposed by the hosts covers a lot of the
accommodation and food costs, some of the remaining expenditure that needs to be
covered includes transport, miscellaneous and registration costs with Te Mana Akonga.

$615 for Performance Equipment (including the purchase/hire of poi, guitars, guitar
strings, guitar stand, rākau stand, koikoi, rau, piupiu, tīpare).

Event 3: Māori Graduation
Purpose:
What is the event for?
Māori Graduation is a celebration designed to honour and recognise the achievements of
tauira graduating from Waipapa Taumata Rau. This event will allow graduating tauira to unite,
celebrate their academic accomplishments, and connect with whānau, friends, and the
wider community. The event will include a formal ceremony, speeches, and refreshments,
making it a significant moment for students and their families.
What will be happening at the event?
The Māori Graduation event wil feature the following:
●
Formal ceremony: Graduating students will be called to receive their certificates,
and each student’s academic journey and achievements will be recognised.
●
Speeches and acknowledgments: The event will include speeches from key
university staff and student representatives, highlighting the significance of Māori
success in higher education.
●
Cultural performances: The event will incorporate traditional Māori performances
such as haka or waiata to celebrate the graduates' achievements and reflect Māori
cultural values.
●
Whānau involvement: Graduates will be invited to bring their whānau and friends to
celebrate alongside them, creating a supportive environment where their family’s
contributions to their success are acknowledged.
●
Refreshments and socialising: After the formalities, attendees will have the
opportunity to socialise, enjoy food, and take photos to mark this milestone moment
in the graduates’ academic journeys.
How many attendees?
We expect around
200 people to attend Māori Graduation. This includes the graduating
students, their whānau, friends, university staff, and other key individuals supporting Māori
student success.
What is the goal?
The primary goals of the Māori Graduation event are to:

Celebrate the success of Māori graduates: Acknowledge the hard work and
achievements of tauira in their academic journey and graduation.
2.
Strengthen cultural pride and identity: Foster a sense of pride in academic
success, recognising the achievements of our tauira in the context of their cultural
heritage.
3.
Encourage future tauira: Inspire other tauira to pursue their academic goals, seeing
Māori graduates as role models for success in higher education.
4.
Create lasting memories: Provide a memorable experience for students and their
families, marking an important chapter in their lives and celebrating their journey at
Waipapa Taumata Rau.

Māori Graduation is an event for tauira who are graduating, as it gives them the recognition
and support they deserve. Their whānau will also benefit from the event, as they are key
contributors to the graduates' success. Additionally, current and prospective tauira will
benefit by being inspired and motivated by the achievements of their peers, and the
university community as a whole will benefit from celebrating the success of its tauira.

Māori Graduation is significant because it:

We are seeking
$11,500 to cover the cost of the Māori Graduation event, which will be
allocated as follows:

Venue and setup:
$4,500 for the venue rental, decoration, and setting up the space
for the ceremony and socialising areas.

Catering (food and refreshments):
$4,500 to provide high-quality catering for food
and refreshments for the attendees, including graduates, their whānau, and other
guests.
●
Event materials:
$1,000 for graduation certificates, signage, promotional materials,
and any other printed materials required.
●
Event coordination and misc expenses:
$1500 to cover any unforeseen costs, event
coordination, or logistical support necessary for the event to run smoothly.
Event 4: Kai tahi
Purpose:
What is the event for?
The event is organised for all tauira at Waipapa Taumata Rau to unite, share kai, and connect.
The purpose is to foster a sense of community and unity among tauira, al owing us to break
bread together and strengthen the cultural bonds that tie us as a whānau.
What will be happening at the event?
At the event, tauira wil gather to enjoy a shared meal, celebrate our cultural heritage, and
engage with one another in a relaxed and welcoming environment. It will be an opportunity
for first-year students to get to know their tuākana and the executives of Ngā Tauira Māori.
There will be opportunities to connect, share stories, and build relationships through
whakawhanaungatanga and moments of cultural exchange and support among peers.
How many attendees?
Based on the registrations from the Club's Expo (around 160), we anticipate approximately 60
to 80 tauira will attend the event. This will include first-year students, tuākana, and Ngā
Tauira Māori executives.
What is the goal? Celebrations, educational, social, wellbeing, networking, etc.?
The event aims to celebrate our Māori culture, promote social connection, and enhance
wellbeing within the Māori student community. It is an opportunity to build stronger
networks, offer mutual support, and create a space where tauira can share experiences and
challenges. The event aims to bring a sense of belonging and pride through the shared
experience of kai and whakawhanaungatanga.
Who benefits from the event? Why is it important? What impact will this have?
The event will benefit all tauira at Waipapa Taumata Rau. It is essential because it creates a
space where tauira can unite, celebrate their shared identity, and build lasting relationships
with their peers. In addition, the event will contribute to attendees' mental and emotional
well-being by offering a sense of community and belonging, which is vital for student
success.
The event's impact will be significant, as it will help foster stronger connections among
tauira, enhance their sense of cultural pride, and encourage them to support one another
academically and personally. By eating together as one, we reinforce our shared values and
strengthen the whānau (family) ties within our Māori student community, which will have a
lasting effect on individual and collective well-being.

Event 5: Exam Wā
Purpose:
What is the event for?
Exam Wā is a unique initiative to support tauira during stressful exams. For a set number of
days during the exam period, we wil provide a safe, supportive, and culturally affirming
space where students can stay on-site to study, rest, and recharge between their exams. In
addition to offering a quiet and collaborative study environment, we will provide nutritious
meals to help sustain students throughout this challenging period.
What will be happening at the event?
During Exam Wā, students can access study rooms, quiet areas, and group study spaces to
prepare for their exams. We also offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner along with snacks daily so
students are well-nourished throughout the day. This event balances academic focus,
relaxation, and cultural support, ensuring students remain physically and mentally prepared
for their exams. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to connect with their peers
and access wellbeing support as needed.
How many attendees?
We anticipate around 20–30 tauira will attend Exam Wā, depending on the number of
students with exams. This number may fluctuate, but we expect a steady group of students
to benefit from the initiative during the exam period.
What is the goal?
The Exam Wā aims to provide tauira with a space to focus on their exams, feel supported by
their peers, and care for their physical and mental well-being. The specific goals are:
1.
Create a supportive exam environment, offering a dedicated space for tauira to
study, rest, and recharge.

Ensure well-being by providing healthy and nourishing meals throughout the exam
period, reducing the stress of studying and exam preparation.
3.
Foster social connections among tauira, allowing them to form study groups, share
resources, and provide mutual support during this high-pressure time.
4.
Provide cultural affirmation, ensuring that tauira feel comfortable, valued, and
connected to their heritage during a stressful academic period.
Who benefits from the event?
Tauira preparing for exams, particularly those chal enged with balancing study and personal
well-being during the exam period. The event also ensures that tauira have the necessary
resources to succeed academically and maintain their mental and physical health.
Why is it important? What impact will this have?
The Exam Wā is critical for several reasons:

environment where tauira can perform at their best academically. This support can
directly improve exam performance and overall academic outcomes.

$3,000 for Exam Wā, which will run for the exam period. This funding will cover the
costs of meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) for the students and any additional resources
required to ensure the space is set up effectively for study. We plan to al ocate
$200 per day
to cover the students'
Ingredients and food preparation costs, ensuring that each tauira is well-fed and supported
throughout the day.
Event 6: End of Year Dinner
Purpose:
What is the event for?
End of Year Dinner is a formal dinner celebration fol owing the conclusion of lectures, leading
into exam season. The event allows us to recognise the achievements of some of our
members including certificates of congratulations for graduates of the academic year, and
general certificates of appreciation.
What will be happening at the event?
End of Year Dinner will be hosted at a catered venue, where food will be provided for
attendees. Once participants are present, our prize giving ceremony begins where we will
recognise the outstanding achievements of our members, including the recognition of the
academic success of the academic year graduates. We also award some of the general
members of the association who have contributed in helping the executive with running,
organising, or hosting events. The event will also feature a photo booth for attendees to use
at any point of the night.
Expected Attendees
We expect around
50 people to be in attendance for End of Year Dinner. This includes
students and graduates of our association.
Event Goals
The primary goal of End of Year Dinner is to:
1.
Celebrate the success of our members: A more personalised acknowledgement of
the hard work and achievements of tauira who have completed their academic
journey.
2.
Encourage fulfillment: By recognising some of the mahi our tauira do for the
association, we hope to not only award the hard working tauira, but to encourage
others tauira to do things not only for their own benefit, but for the benefit of those
around them as well.
3.
Relaxation: As EoYD follows the end of lectures, it provides a night for our tauira to
unwind and de-stress leading into exam season.
Who benefits from the event?
End of Year Dinner is an event for any tauira/alumni of our association to connect with peers,
while also being recognised for their support of the association and the events that occur
throughout the year. This event also benefits academic year graduates as they will receive
personalised certificates from the executive.
