Tēnā korua e ngā Tumuaki o Ngā Tauira Māori,
We acknowledge the impact recent events have had on you and the wider association, and we are here to support you to
ensure Ngā Tauira Māori (NTM) prospers in future.
we wil be reviewing the fol owing:
1. The enrolment status of NTM Executive members.
2. The use of university funds for the Katch-a-Māori event during the weekend of the 21st and 22nd of March.
3. The alignment of NTM members’ behaviour at this event with the values and te ao Māori principles of the
University, the requirements of the student charter, code of conduct and University policies and procedures.
In accordance with the University of Auckland Official Recognition Principles (attached), these matters wil be reviewed by
members of the Club Support & Engagement Committee (CSEC) with the guidance of the Office of the Pro-Vice Chancel or
Māori. During this time, the University’s official recognition of NTM wil be on hold to support NTM in reestablishing a
governance and membership structure, principles and operating framework that align with its constitution and the
University’s policies and values as described above.
For this period no NTM events are to be delivered using University and/or Student Levy funds, in representation of the
University or using the name “University of Auckland” or ‘Waipapa Taumata Rau’ or both. This includes any planned events
such as Haerenga. Additionally, access to University resources and services such as rooms and equipment is not permitted
during this period. However, so that activities for tauira Māori can continue to be offered, we invite NTM portfolio holders to
discuss coordinating planned university-related events in col aboration with He Āhuru Mōwai, under the leadership and
guidance of the Office of the Pro-Vice Chancel or Māori. We recognise the importance of Māori Graduation and can confirm
that the Office of Pro-Vice Chancel or Māori wil lead this event, in partnership with volunteers and/or portfolio holders, to
ensure the celebration of graduates continues.
We are aware that the Complaint has been submitted to the Student Conduct Manager for investigation. This investigation
wil occur concurrently but separately to the review of official recognition status.
The University is committed to NTM and the role it serves in uplifting and supporting tauira Māori through tikanga and te ao
Māori. We are therefore committed to supporting NTM to be able to attain reinstatement once any conditions required by
CSEC, and the Office of the PVC Māori have been met. This wil include the establishment of a new Memorandum of
Understanding between the University and NTM.
The next steps we wil take are as fol ows:
• Staff from He Āhuru Mōwai and PVC Māori wil make contact with NTM Portfolio holders to initiate discussions
regarding planned events for tauira Māori;
• The appropriate members of the Clubs Support & Engagement Committee wil review the matters outlined above
and respond with the required conditions and plan for reinstating official recognition.
