Candidate Information, Film and Literature Board of Review
The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Minister) is seeking expressions of interest for
appointment as one of three members for the Film and Literature Board of Review (the
Board).
About the Board The Board is a statutory appeal body, established under section 91 of the Films, Videos, and
Publications Act 1993 (the Act), to review classification decisions of the Office of Film and
Literature Classification. Members are appointed for terms of up to three years and may be
reappointed for one further term.
Membership, commitment and fees
The Board consists of up to nine members appointed by the Minister under the Act.
Member’s fees are $700 per day. The Board conducts three to six reviews per year on
average.
Selection Criteria
Applicants should have a mix of:
1)
an understanding of youth and youth issues
2)
community leadership (including from sectors subject to the Classification Act)
3)
theological expertise
4)
an understanding of the application of technology to media (including social media
and AI)
5)
medical experience
6)
legal experience.
Applicants must have a high level of maturity. Given the Board’s role as an expert tribunal
reviewing objectionable publications and material, members must be able to view sexually
explicit, violent, sensitive and controversial material without undue distress.
Conflicts of interest
Candidates must declare any actual or perceived conflicts of interest, or any other matter that may
make their appointment inappropriate. The Department may check the accuracy of any information
under the Official Information Act 1982
provided.
Diversity of representation
Expressions of interest are welcomed from candidates who can offer a range of cultural and
personal perspectives. This includes candidates from groups that have historically been
underrepresented at a governance level, such as younger candidates, Māori, Pasifika, recent
migrants, gender diverse New Zealanders and people living with disabilities.
