I am responding to your email of 14 March 2026 to the Department of Internal Affairs
(the Department) requesting the fol owing under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act):
I noted, you have call expression of interest for Film and Literature Board of Review.
May I ask how you called for public nomination and on what platform you have call for public
nominations e.g. govt.jobs website. A copy of your ad and pay rate for the role as wel . Also,
how many applications you have received for each of the role from the public and how many
you have received from other nominating agencies such as TPK or Ministry of women etc for
your role. How many you have shortlisted and how many you have interviewed.
Also, how many space you are looking to fil in this round. Would you provide any equipment to
the successful candidate (e.g., a laptop, mobile phone, etc.)? Also, what other benefits would
they receive besides payment, such as Air NZ Koru membership or other perks?
Update on your request
On 30 April 2026, the Department provided a response to your request in relation to the Archives
Council. We regret that the portion of your request relating to the Film and Literature Board of
Review was not addressed at that time. The information responding to that part of your request is
therefore provided below.
Responses to your questions are set out below
The Department advertised for applications to the Film and Literature Board of Review via the
Department’s statutory appointments webpage and also provided the opportunity for nominations
through relevant nominating agencies. In addition, the Minister of Internal Affairs sought
nominations from caucus colleagues. To ensure the Board has the appropriate mix of skills and
experience, suitably qualified individuals were also approached directly to gauge their interest in
submitting a self-nomination.
A copy of the advertising material is attached as
Appendix A. This appointment round will fill six Film and Literature Board of Review roles, three of which,
including the Presiding Member, may be reappointments of current members.
The Department received a total of 15 applications during this appointment round. This includes one
application received from the Ministry for Ethnic Communities. Shortlisting is currently underway
and applications are still under assessment. Interviews have not yet been conducted. Accordingly,
the portion of your request relating to the number of applicants shortlisted and interviewed is
refused under section 18(e) of the Act, as the information requested does not yet exist.
Remuneration, equipment, and other support
In addition to the daily fee payable for Board duties, Film and Literature Board of Review members
are provided with the following support:
• a laptop for use during in-person meetings at the Department of Internal Affairs to access
meeting materials;
• Airpoints with Air New Zealand, where members have provided their Airpoints number in
advance;
• a catered lunch on each day of in-person hearings;
• reimbursement of reasonable meals and incidentals incurred while members are in
Wellington for hearings;
• reimbursement of travel costs, including taxi, rideshare, or petrol expenses, for travel to and
from the airport and the Department;
• flights and accommodation associated with travel to Wellington; and
• access to counselling support, including sessions with a psychologist following the conclusion
of hearings where required, due to the nature of the material reviewed.
