Tēnā koe Colin
Thank you for your information request email of 11 March 2026 to the Department of
Corrections – Ara Poutama Aotearoa, requesting information about staff terminations from
2021 - 2022. Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982
(OIA).
You requested:
1. How many Corrections staff were terminated by mutual agreement between the 2
parties for the 12-month period of. July 1st, 2021, to June 30th, 2022.
Corrections does not centrally record data as to staff employment ‘that was terminated by
mutual agreement’. This information is held on individual employee files, and would require
extensive manual collation to determine. Accordingly, this part of your request is refused
under section 18(f) of the OIA, as the information cannot be made available without
substantial collation or research.
As per section 18B of the OIA, we have considered whether consulting with you would
enable the request to be made in a form that would remove the reason for the refusal.
However, we do not consider that the request can be refined in this instance.
2. Of these staff terminations how many staff terminations were a result of a payout
from implementing the Severance Clause, within the Staff Col ective Employment
Contract.
3. And how many of these staff terminations was a result of a payout from
implementing the Redundancy Clause, within the Staff Col ective Employment
Contract.
Between 1 July 2021 and 30 June 2022, there were nine staff recorded as being made
redundant. Two staff accepted voluntary redundancy which was mutual y agreed and the
remaining staff individuals left Corrections’ employment when no other options were
identified for them during a change management process. This has been classed as
redundancy. Our records indicate none of the nine were vaccine related.
