Thank you for your request for information under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA)
dated 27 February 2026 in which you requested:
“I would like to please request the grade distribution and grade averages for the

NWEN243
For courses taught in more than one trimester (ENGR121, ENGR123, COMP102,
COMP103) can you please include the distribution and average for both the
individual trimester and overall for the year.”
On 27 February 2026, you were contacted to discuss the scope of your request, as your
original request would likely be refused under section 18(f) of the OIA as it would require
substantial research and collation in order to respond. On that same day, you agreed to
refine your request to be for:

“I would like to amend the request to confirm I only want grade statistics of courses
taught in trimesters 1, 2 and 3 of the 2025 academic year including also, in the case of
COMP103, trimester 3 taught in January - February 2026. Given previous
information requested by other parties I would like to now only request for the the
grade distribution and average GPA of the following papers:
1.
COMP102
2.
COMP103
3.
CYBR171
4.
AIML131
For the courses taught in multiple trimesters (COMP102, COMP103) I would like
grade distribution and average GPA statistics for both the individual trimesters they
were taught in and for the aggregated data from both trimesters for each course.”
Please note that this request is considered a new request under section 15(1AA) of the OIA.
On 4 March 2026, you were contacted and advised that Grade Point Averages (GPAs) are
qualification based, rather than course based, so it is not possible to break down information
for you in this way. You can read more about how GPAs are calculated here:
https://www.wgtn.ac.nz/students/study/progress/grades. You were asked if you would be
willing to withdraw this part of your request on this basis. To date, a response has not been
received by you.
Response to your request
Please see Annex A for the requested information, accurate as at 11 March 2026. Please note
non-pass grades have not been included in the breakdown. To see descriptions for the
various letter grades, please visit the University website here:
https://www.wgtn.ac.nz/students/study/progress/grades
Your request for a breakdown of GPA per course is refused under section 18(e) of the OIA, as
the information does not exist.
